About

Picture
Hannah Assefa, Ph.D. (she/her), is an experienced educator and equity-driven professional development designer with a passion for helping teachers grow in their practice through reflection, cultural humility, and joyful learning. She has worked with children for most of her life—whether through private instruction in traditional fiddle or as a classroom teacher—and brings over a decade of experience creating learning environments where every student is seen, celebrated, and empowered.
Raised in Northern Vermont as a biracial child navigating questions of identity, Hannah understands the deep and often unseen complexity each student brings into the classroom. This lived experience grounds her commitment to culturally responsive teaching and affirming, student-centered education.
Hannah continues to teach at The Barn School, where she fosters classroom communities rooted in curiosity, care, and connection. She recently earned her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Southern New Hampshire University. Her research focused on the role of initial teacher training, cultural humility, and critical service learning in shaping teachers' self-efficacy in culturally responsive classroom management.
In addition to teaching, Hannah designs and facilitates professional learning experiences for educators and is developing curriculum and resource materials that support culturally responsive practice, SEL integration, and joyful, interdisciplinary learning. She is committed to equipping educators with the tools they need to lead classrooms where every student thrives.
